The Kings Hotel

The Kings Hotel

Hotel Address:No. 32, Halls Road,, Chennai (Madras) 600008, India (Egmore)

I stayed here for nearly two weeks in August, so the length of my stay should tell you something about the comfort and quality. I got a good night's sleep every night. Place was very clean.

Not to say there weren't a few problems. I might have seen three roaches during my entire time there, but it's not because of the place. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, roaches are going to come into your property, even if it's nice and clean. the hotel stays on top of it because it smells like roach spray ... something they probably should disguise with some incense.

There was a little lizard-type creature once in my room, but I've seen these things all over India, so, again, sometimes these creatures get in. Besides, when I complained, staff promptly came and dispatched of the lizard or whatever the hell it was.

Free breakfast is good. It's veg but it's good.

Staff need a little training. Some of them could stand to improve their English. But all in all, you're going to get what you want if you ask for it, even a discount if you're staying at length like I did.

The surroundings, like with many hotels, are what they are. Rickshaw drivers are aggressive about giving you a ride. There's a children's hospital that looks like a place to do anything but get well.

On the upside, there's a great restaurant at a hotel up the street called Royal Restaurant or something like that, and their tandoori chicken is the best.

The intersection by the store in the opposite direction is hectic when school lets out. Surprised nobody got killed. Look both ways at all times.

Bottom line, if you gotta stay in Chennai on business, this is a decent place to stay. It's close to the Egmore railway station so that's a plus, too.

Also, they have wireless, but it might not work in all areas. When I complained, the hotel staff put me in a room near the front desk, where the wireless worked. I can't vouch for the rest of the hotel.

Also, be sure to ask to see the room you're going to get. Not all rooms in this place are of the same quality.

Friend Reviews,
We got an economy room for one night at the Kings Hotel. The room was clean and everything worked - nothing fancy. No problem with noise. Location was good for us (close to train stations and sites of interest). We got a discount for paying when we checked in rather than when we checked out. The only real problem we had was with the restaurants.

One of the hotel restaurants had a strong insecticide smell and service was very very slow (we waited an hour for our food but the food was very good). Breakfast was served in another hotel restaurant which also had a strong smell. The breakfast itself was spoiled by cold food that was supposed to be hot (coffee , hotwater, and hot breakfast dishes were lukewarm) and waiters who didn't seem to care. If you avoid the restaurants at the hotel you should be fine!
